The week of September 5, 2010:

The movie of the week follows the adventures of a teenage girl and her surfing friends on the beach in Malibu. Gidget stars Sandra Dee in the second of five films she released in 1959. The movie was a big hit with teenagers and transformed Dee into one of the most popular teenage stars of the twentieth century.

Stars: Sandra Dee
Directed by: Paul
Released in: 1959

While at the beach with her girlfriends one day, Francie Lawrence becomes interested in surfing. All the surfers treat Lawrence like one of the guys and nickname her Gidget. The surfers’ leader is known as the Kahuna, a man whose sole goal in life is to travel the world looking for the perfect waves. All the younger surfers aspire to Kahuna’s life. Yet, Gidget is taken under the reluctant wing of one of the younger surfers instead. Gidget’s chaperone is nicknamed Moondoggie and comes from a privileged background but wants to live life on his own terms, just like Kahuna. As Gidget spends more time with Moondoggie, she develops deep feelings for him. Gidget realizes she has all summer to get Moondoggie to return the affection. If he doesn’t then perhaps Jeff Matthews will, he is the college son of a friend of Gidget’s father. Their parents have been trying to set the pair on a date all summer.

Fact: The producer of Gidget wanted Elvis Presley to play one of the leading male roles but the studio declined because Presley was at the time too expensive.
